In 1970, André Damon established the French Pub on the Boulevard Saint- Michel. The following year, he dug up a complete collection of the "Petit Journal" in his grandmother's attic. He used it to decorate the walls, and the customers themselves soon renamed the place. Soon after, the Petit Journal Saint- Michel became a refuge for traditional jazz fans, daunted by the waves of free jazz and jazz rock that had flooded other popular clubs. By the beginning of the 1980s, frequented by big- name performers (Claude Bolling, the Golden Gate Quartet, Stéphane Grappelli), the space was filling up every night. André Damon, dubbed "Dédé" by the musicians, inaugurated the Petit Journal Montparnasse: 260 seats on the ground floor of the Hôtel Méridien. The dinner- jazz phenomenon became an overnight success. Today, there's nary a jazz musician who hasn't passed through the Petit- Journal, where you'll find the very best of the genre. Drop in for a drink and wind up spending an entire evening immersed in the comforting notes of jazz in all its variations. Or, like many Parisians, you may prefer to reserve for dinner in the New Orleans ambience.
