After 2005 Riots, What Now, Paris?

In 2005, the world was shocked when riots broke out in France, beginning in its capital of Paris and spreading outwards. The riots, dominated by poor French youth, were sparked by the deaths of juveniles Bouna Traoure and Zyed Benna but unrest apparently had been building up for some time before.

The roots of the unrest are said to stem from discrimination against dark-skinned migrants, especially those with foreign sounding names, are Muslim, and who come from poor neighborhoods. The mood of the rioters was further set ablaze by comments from interior minister Nicolas Sarkozy though no further deaths resulted.
