The Bois de Boulogne has been part of Paris for only half a century. It is a vestige of the Rouvray Forest which once spread as far as the walls of Lutece.
Returning from a pilgrimage at Boulogne sur Mer, Philippe le Bel had a chapel built, devoted to the cult of Notre- Dame de Boulogne at the Menils. The village soon became known by the name of its chapel.
Further North, a long strip of farmland used to line the Seine. Louis IX founded an abbey there for his daughter, Isabelle de France.
Alphan and Haussmann led more than 12.000 men to the battle of the Bois which was won in several days. More than 95 kms of paths, lakes, islands, water falls, ponds and one Artesian well have been created.
For his visits to the Bois, the Emperor had kept for himself a little Pavillon at the foot of the "Grande Cascade" (the great Water Fall) hence its name.
This Pavillon was turned into a restaurant for the World Fair of 1900.

My kids make sure that we eat out at La Grande Cascade. Everytime they want a reward for their hardwork. They always want to be top in their quizzes or exams just because they are so fond of eating at La Grande Cascade. It is a win win situation for me, aside from eating in my favorite resto, my kids are getting high grades in school as well. nofollow
