As the organizor of the 1998 Soccer World Cup, France and Paris needed a world class stadium to complement the 45 000 seats Parc des Princes near the Bois de Boulogne . The Stade de France, looking like a flying saucer, accomodates 80 000 visitors and can host all kinds of sports and cultural events.
The Stade de France has been inaugurated on January 28th 1988 with a France/Spain soccer game. It hosted the France 98 World Soccer Cup final on July 12th 1998 and saw the historic victory of France 3/0 over Brazil. The Stade de France is located a few kilometers north of Paris in the city of Saint- Denis, a city also known for its 12th century cathedral which used to be the burial place of the kings of France.
