Roman Catholic cathedral

Notre Dame de Paris is a famous Roman Catholic cathedral located within the city of Paris, France. The Archbishop of Paris is based in this Gothic-style Roman Catholic cathedral. Architect Viollet-le-Duc is believed to be instrumental at reviving the Notre Dame de Paris which is a fine example of the French Gothic style of architecture. One aspect of this Roman Catholic cathedral that draws the attention of students of architecture is the flying buttress detail. The flying buttress was meant to shore up the wall structure to relieve these of stress fractures caused by the thinner walls that mark Gothic architecture. The 19th century renovations brought back the Roman Catholic cathedral to its previous level of beauty destroyed in the 18th century amidst the French Revolution.

Bishop Maurice de Sully

Notre Dame de Paris was built from year 1163 to around year 1345. Bishop Maurice de Sully was instrumental at conceptualizing the design of the Notre Dame de Paris and spent much of his own funds for the building project. Even after Bishop Maurice de Sully died, the work on the Notre Dame de Paris cathedral was carried on under the guidance of many other architects (which explains why the cathedral seems to have many styles added to it in various phases.) At one point, the Notre Dame de Paris was threatened by fire set by Communards during the bloody Paris Commune period of 1871. This Roman Catholic Cathedral survived but tens of thousands of Communards were eventually executed and many fled to other countries.
